Elisabeth LaMotte-Mitchell

Elisabeth most recently hails from Harriet Tubman Charter School, where she was the Director of Curriculum and Instruction for five years. As Director of Curriculum and Instruction, LaMotte-Mitchell directly managed middle school teachers and provided professional development and curricular support. As part of the leadership team that moved Tubman from an F to a C school in just two years, LaMotte-Mitchell’s support of middle school teachers led to great gains for students at Tubman. For four years, her 8th grade teachers outperformed the state and Recovery School District (RSD) in math and ELA. In 2014, 74% of LaMotte-Mitchell’s own 8th grade math students passed the LEAP at Basic and above, outperforming the RSD and the state. In 2016, 7 out of 12 middle school classes had more than 70% of students score Basic or above in science, math, and ELA.
LaMotte-Mitchell has extensive teaching and leadership experience prior to joining the founding Tubman team. LaMotte-Mitchell began her career teaching at Friendship Charter in the Anacostia neighborhood in Washington, D.C. as a corps member with Teach for America. There, LaMotte-Mitchell and her team achieved double-digit gains and received the prestigious EPIC award. At Friendship, she served as science department chair, mentor teacher, and science curriculum coordinator. LaMotte-Mitchell went on to teach in Chicago, IL, where her students increased 23 points in math and 18 points in reading on the NWEA. Elisabeth received a bachelor’s degree in political science from California Polytechnic State University.
