Director of Enrichment, Akili Academy

Tryphena Hughes is the Director of Enrichment at Akili Academy of New Orleans Charter School. Tryphena leads the design and development of all curriculum, community outreach, and productions of the enrichment team. Under her leadership in PK-4, scholars at Akili are able to engage in early experiences that inspire interest and creativity in arts and technology. After transitioning to middle school, scholars build interpersonal skills that nurture various forms of creative expression. As Director of Enrichment, Tryphena leads her team to instill values of hope, community, respect, patience, and trust; through these values scholars are equipped with the necessary tools for high school and beyond.
Prior to joining the Akili Academy family, Tryphena began her career as a high school band director in San Antonio, Texas. During this time, 30 of her students received college music scholarships, participated in the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C., and she was awarded the Champion Educators “Principal Award”. Since joining Akili in 2018 , she continues to build the Akili band and enrichment programs including dance, percussion, and drama. In 2019, Tryphena assisted Akili in receiving the VH1 Save the Music Grant. This grant provided 36 additional instruments for scholars.
Tryphena is a member of Women Band Directors International, Louisiana Music Educators Association (LMEA), National Association for Music Education (NAfME), and Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from Florida A & M University and holds a Masters of Education in Educational Leadership & Policy Studies from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
